WOMEN ON WAVES were invited to come to Portugal in the end of august to put legal abortion on the agenda again.
The Portuguese government, based on military laws, forbidden the boat to sail into Portuguese territorial waters – treating them as invaders jeopardising national peace. During the whole period, not only the government boycotted the debate about abortion in Portugal, but also fabricated a lot of counter information undermining a rational discussion about the reasons and the conditions under which portuguese women have abortions nowadays.
The Portuguese women that voluntary interrupt pregnancy are persecuted and convicted in a court of law. It is already a painful decision to have an abortion, moreover in a country that is in its majority catholic, so besides being a crime of law it is a crime to the soul, not only are these women convicted to prison but also to hell.
In the Meantime the illegal practice of abortion in subhuman condition will continue and the number of women convicted by the practice or as accomplices will just keep rising. The lack of a free and democratic discussion about the Voluntary interruption o pregnancy reveals the prejudice and ignorance of our politicians and leaders.
